Graduation: specific information

Final Examination

The final examination consists of preparing an original thesis that addresses a problem proposed by a research laboratory or a company. You will need to analyse, formalise and solve the problem using the most appropriate tools and present the results to a specialised committee first and to a general audience after.

The thesis must be developed in a research laboratory or a partner company under the supervision of a supervisor, who is usually a lecturer from the Course. It must be written and discussed in English.

To be admitted to the final examination, you must have completed all exams and obtained the required credits at least 15 days before the graduation date. Credits related to the final examination are excluded.

In addition to uploading your thesis to Esse3, you must submit a hard copy to the President of the Graduation Committee at least 8 days before the graduation session.

The final examination also involves the public discussion of the results of the thesis in two phases: the pre-graduation and the final graduation discussion.

Pre-graduation

During the pre-graduation, you must present your thesis in a 20-25 minute public seminar before a Pre-graduation Committee composed of the supervisor, any co-supervisors, and two additional members from the Board of Studies, members of partner institutions or lecturers from the University of Trieste. The pre-graduation committee members are appointed by the supervisor.

The committee will send a report to the President, proposing any additional points to the final grade and, if applicable, the awarding of honours.

Final discussion (Graduation)

During the final discussion, you must give a brief presentation of your work before a Graduation Committee appointed by the Head of the Department, . The presentation shoul last no more than 8-10 minutes, using slides as support. Longer presentations will be interrupted and will negatively affect the final grade.

At the end of the presentation, the Committee will privately discuss your dissertation and assign the final grade.

Final grade calculation

The final grade will be based on:

  • The evaluation of the academic record
  • The content and the discussion of the thesis
  • Other learning activities undertaken during your study

The final grade is calculated by adding from 0 to 10 additional points for the dissertation to the weighted average of the exam grades. Honours (lode) may be granted with the unanimous approval of the commission.
