Syllabus

Aim of the course is to achieve base methods and solutions for the analysis, design and verification of structural steel members and systems.
In particular:

D1 - Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student will have to know the basic aspects of the structural behavior of steel elements and structural systems, the methods of verification and of the general and detailed design also with reference to the national regulations
D2 - Applying knowledge and understanding
Lo studente dovrà essere in grado di eseguire la la verifica di ressitenza una tipica struttura (trave o telaio) in acciaio.
The student must be able to perform the resistance verification of a typical steel structure (beam or frame system).
D3 - Making judgements
At the end of the course the student must be able to carry out a critical examination of the correct application of the knowledge acquired and applied to the resistance verification of structural systems composed of steel.
D4 - Communication
The student, at the end of the course, must be able to explain correctly - with the correct use of the technical terms - the knowledge and practical skills acquired
D5 - Lifelong learning skills

The student must be able to deal with the study of more complex aspects related to performance of structures (composed of steel or other traditional materials for constructions), being object of subsequent courses, or part of the following professional activity.

Knowledge of "Statics" course content (preparatory) is required

1) Statically determined structural systems 2) Beam theory, including reference loading configurations such as axial loads, bending moment, shear, torsion 3) Resistance verification of structural steel members 4) Satically indeterminated systems 5) Joints and connections in steel structures. Examples, calculation methods, calculation examples for bolted connections 6) Structural model; design, planning and construction of a structural model

1) Power point slides (lectures) + additional material from Moodle

Recommended books (in italian):
2) Comi C., Corradi Dell’Acqua L., “Introduzione alla meccanica strutturale”, McGraw-Hill

1) Statically determined structural systems 2) Beam theory, including reference loading configurations such as axial loads, bending moment, shear, torsion 3) Resistance verification of structural steel members 4) Satically indeterminated systems 5) Joints and connections in steel structures: examples and typologies (bolted joints, welded joints, etc.); theory, calculation examples

Frontal lectures and guided excercises will be organized during the course, in preparation to the partial intermediate test (or to final exam).

Continuous feedback and updates will be offered via Moodle

Two intermediate tests will take part at mid course and at its conclusion. These partial tests will include: 1) an excercise on the resistance verification of a given isostatic structural system and 2) questions on theory. The partial tests will be accessible to the attending students only (min 70% the attendance frequency at the lectures). In the case of a positive evaluation, the final result will be calculated as their average.
