Syllabus

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: acquire knowledge of the respiratory system, its essential functions
and the foundations of pathophysiology of respiratory and pulmonary diseases. Acquire adequate biomedical terminology also on the interpretation of spirometry.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: be able to apply the acquired knowledge, as a solid basis for dealing with clinical activity and spirometry.

MAKING JUDGMENTS: acquire an adequate capacity for critical elaboration of the morpho-functional and pathophysiological correlations of respiratory and pulmonary diseases in order to be able to act correctly in a clinical setting and in the evaluation of functional tests.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: the acquisition of adequate biomedical terminology is essential for interfacing within the biomedical scientific community.

LEARNING SKILLS: the study of the physiopathology of respiratory and pulmonary diseases is preparatory to clinical reasoning in order to correctly frame pulmonary pathologies.

Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system

- Pathophysiology of respiratory diseases. In particular COPD and bronchial hypersecretive diseases which are of particular interest to the physiotherapist

- Fundamentals of the main respiratory function tests, of the objective evaluation of the patient, of oxygen therapy and ventilotherapy.

ERS Handbook of Respiratory Medicine
Edited by Paolo Palange and Gernot Rohde
European Respiratory Society Monography

- Anatomy / functionality of the respiratory system and general classification of respiratory diseases
- Study of the respiratory function (spirometry, diffusion, strength of the respiratory muscles, blood gas analysis, pulse oximetry, stress test)
- Respiratory failure (acute / chronic, partial / global, ventilatory / pulmonary) and its supportive therapy (oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation)
- Harm from smoking and cessation
- Diseases that cause bronchial hypersecretion (bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, etc.), atelectasis
- Respiratory disorders in the neuromuscular patient
- Pneumothorax
-Pneumonia and infectious diseases
- Lung cancer (outline)
- Progressive chronic diseases that cause dyspnoea (COPD / emphysema, bronchial asthma, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis and diffuse infiltrative pneumopathies)
- Respiratory disorders in the obese patient (with attention to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome / OSAS)
- Respiratory problems in the surgical patient
Lung transplant

Lectures with slide-sets based on interaction with the aim of transferring knowledge.

The powerpoint presentations relating to the teaching units are available on the moodle@units and Microsoft Teams platforms

The successful completion of the written examination is expressed by approval (approved / not approved). To obtain approval, the student must achieve at least 18 points out of the 31 available, thus demonstrating that he has acquired an acceptable knowledge of the contents and that he has also acquired the preparatory skills for clinical reasoning to correctly frame the functional pulmonary alterations and related pathologies. WRITTEN EXAMINATION: “Written test consisting of 30 multiple choice questions and 1 open answer question. Duration of the test 1 hour. For multiple choice questions: for each question there are 4 answer options, only one of which is correct. The final grade is obtained according to the following criteria: 1 point for each correct open answer and 0 points if an incorrect or missing answer, 1 point for the open answer if the student demonstrates that he/she has acquired an excellent knowledge of the topic covered and to have answered exhaustively and with excellent language skills. A score lower than 1 is also foreseen for the multiple choice - up to 0.5 points if the answer is incomplete, only partially correct and the argument presented in a confused manner and with little or no language skills, 0 points if the student does not respond or does not demonstrate an acceptable knowledge of the contents.”

This course explores topics closely related to one or more goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs)
