Through tutorial teaching, students will apply knowledge gained from the year's coursework, particularly from the Semeiotics and Pathophysiology course, directly to patient care. Learning Outcomes Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the third year, students must have consolidated knowledge of all previously acquired competencies. They will be able to perform a comprehensive anamnestic collection (patient history) and a complete physical examination, demonstrating a strong understanding of the characteristic clinical signs of major organ and system dysfunctions, as well as the etiology and pathophysiology of common pathologies. Applied Knowledge and Understanding Upon completion of the third year, students must be able to effectively interact with patients during both history taking and physical examination, fostering patient participation. They should also be proficient in interpreting primary laboratory tests and common electrocardiographic findings. Autonomy of Judgment Students will be able to independently assess a patient's health status based on the collected history and performed physical examination. Communication Skills Students should be able to communicate clearly during patient history taking and physical examinations, while consistently demonstrating respect for the patient's privacy and comfort. They must also be able to use correct medical terminology. Learning Ability Students are expected to demonstrate the learning ability necessary for continued independent study, alongside competence in acquiring exhaustive patient histories and performing complete and accurate physical examinations. These objectives will be achieved through active participation in training activities.
Have taken and passed the general pathology examination Have experience, gained in 1st and 2nd year placements, of patient contact and knowledge of semeiotics.
Amboss Microsimulation: Laboratory Medicine, Blood Gas Analysis, EKG. Semeiotics exercises: These are carried out on groups of 4 students who are instructed in the main semeiotic manoeuvres (general objective examination and apparatus objective examination) as per the syllabus of the integrated course in Semeiotics and Laboratory Medicine. Orientation traineeship: This involves practical activities carried out in the wards. For this purpose the Institutes/Departments of Clinical Medicine, Internal Medicine of Trieste, Internal Medicine of Monfalcone and Internal Medicine of Gorizia are available to the students; General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardiology (Trieste, Monfalcone, Pordenone), Nephrology (Trieste, Gorizia), Urology, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Pneumology (Trieste, Monfalcone, Pordenone), Clinical Liver Disease, Haematology, Neurosurgery, Diabetology (Trieste, Monfalcone, Pordenone). The internship enables the student to deal with different hospital and territorial realities, allowing an initial orientation towards the scope of a future professional choice. The programme focuses on the practical application, on the patient, of the knowledge learnt from the teachings of the course year with particular reference to a) Collection of physiological, pathological near and remote anamnesis; b) Performance of general and apparatus objective examination; c) Knowing how to measure vital parameters; d) Interpretation of the most common laboratory tests including haematological and renal function tests; e) Interpretation of the main electrocardiographic pictures; f) Interpretation of haemogasanalysis; g) Interpretation of endoscopic reports in gastroenterology; h) Placement of nasogastric tube; i) Performing venous and arterial blood sampling.
Books and papers suggested by the techers of the year of course:

Amboss Microsimulation: Laboratory Medicine, Blood Gas Analysis, EKG. Semiotics Exercises These involve tutorial teaching for small groups (4 students) led by university clinical tutors. These tutors are faculty from the Semiotics and Laboratory Medicine Course and conduct sessions in dedicated clinics within the Cattinara polyclinics, across various medical and surgical departments of the University Hospital of Trieste. Internship The internship consists of tutorial teaching provided by clinical tutors stationed in the various medical and surgical departments throughout the Training Network of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery.
After the first experience the student has the option to choose a further prolonged period at one of the units already visited in the first stage of the tutorial teaching.
Practical Exam: Evaluation and Discussion This practical exam involves the evaluation and discussion of the items outlined in the Internship Vademecum, the document that regulates internship activities, their implementation, and the objectives for each year. Evaluation Criteria: Excellent: Demonstrates excellent mastery of the items described in the Internship Vademecum. Distinguished: Demonstrates very good mastery of the items described in the Internship Vademecum. Good: Demonstrates good mastery of the items described in the Internship Vademecum. Fair: The student does not demonstrate full mastery of the items described in the Internship Vademecum. Sufficient: Demonstrates sufficient mastery of the items described in the Internship Vademecum. Insufficient: Demonstrates insufficient mastery of the items described in the Internship Vademecum.
