Syllabus

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
The objective of the course is to help students understand various methods of prevention and health promotion, serving as practical tools for their profession. Additionally, students will learn about the main types of diseases.
APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
JUDGMENT AUTONOMY:
Understanding and communicating risk, promoting healthy lifestyles, and emphasizing the importance of prevention.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
The ability to express and communicate potential risks to individuals with unhealthy lifestyles, and to communicate the risks of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Additionally, understanding the importance of vaccinations, their safety, and their application in their professional field.
LEARNING ABILITY:
Preparing for exams by independently planning and managing study based on lecture content, provided teaching materials, and suggested sources for further study.

Knowledge of basic immune mechanisms, the main pathogens responsible for vaccine-preventable diseases, knowledge of the concept of risk and risk factor.

Determinants of Health
Main Socio-Health Indicators: birth rates, life expectancy, access to clean drinking water.
Basics of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics (main epidemiological measures and epidemiological studies).
Objectives and Methods of Prevention: health promotion and disease prevention.
Prevention and Its Areas of Intervention for Public Health Protection:
- Primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary prevention.
- Oncological screenings.
Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinations and discussion of public health clinical cases.
Lifestyle Factors: smoking, diet, physical activity, alcohol consumption, gambling, healthy aging.
Environmental Hygiene (water, soil, air, waste, radon).

Objectives and methods of prevention: Health promotion and disease prevention.

Strategic aims of prevention: health protection, control, elimination and eradication of diseases.

Disease epidemiology: causality, risk factors and protective factors.

Primary prevention: lifestyle factors, interventions on living and working environment.

Vaccinations: history, types of vaccine, vaccination schedule,
Vaccine-preventable diseases

Secondary prevention: population screening;
Tertiary prevention.

Epidemiological methodology: Measures of frequency: crude rates and specific rates; incidence and prevalence, odd ratio.
The main socio-demographic indicators: birth and fertility rates, general mortality, infant, neonatal and perinatal mortality,
morbidity, lethality and survival.

Written examination
Test with multiple-choice questions, 31 questions, passing threshold is 18 correct answers.
