Non-competitive admission with initial proficiency assessment (TOLC)
A test is not required for enrolment, but the course requires an initial proficiency assessment (TOLC)

To enrol in this programme, you must meet the following requirements:
- Educational qualification: you must hold an upper secondary school diploma or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad
- If you hold a foreign qualification, consult the information dedicated to International Students to verify the validity of your qualification and specific admission requirements
- If you have yet to obtain the required qualification
You can request an assessment of your preparation even if you have not yet obtained the required qualification.

TOLC-S
To enrol in the course, applicants must verify their knowledge through the TOLC-S a mandatory, non-selective test administered by the CISIA (Inter-University Consortium for Integrated Access Systems). To take the TOLC, you must register via the CISIA website.
For this programme, the TOLC-I and TOLC-E test is also considered valid taken at other Universities, either in early sessions or autumn sessions, will also be recognised.
- Who must take the TOLC
The TOLC is mandatory for all applicants submitting an enrolment application.
You may be exempt from taking the TOLC if:
- You have already taken the test at another University and met the minimum score required by the degree course.
- You already hold a degree.
- Structure of the test
The TOLC-S consists of 55 multiple-choice questions divided into six main sections:
- Mathematics: 20 questions – 50 minutes
- Logical reasoning, problem-solving, and reading comprehension: 15 questions – 30 minutes
- Biology: 5 questions – 10 minutes
- Chemistry: 5 questions – 10 minutes
- Physics: 5 questions – 10 minutes
- Earth Sciences: 5 questions – 10 minutes
There is also a final section of the test on English language proficiency, consisting of 30 questions to be answered in 15 minutes. This part of the test does not contribute to the total score.
Scoring system:
- 1 point for each correct answer
- -0.25 points for each incorrect answer
- 0 points for unanswered questions
- For the English section only: incorrect and unanswered responses receive 0 points
- Passing the test
The TOLC-S is considered passed if you achieve a total score of at least 18 points. The English language proficiency part of the test does not contribute to the total score.
If your score is below or if you fail to take the TOLC within the specified period, you will be assigned an Additional Education Requirement (OFA). These requirements are designed to help you address any gaps before starting your academic journey. To fulfil the OFA, you will have to pass a specific multiple-choice test to be taken at the same time as the Analysis I exam during the first semester of the first year.
Formats, dates and registration
You can take the test at any University, and it will also be valid for the University of Trieste. TOLC-S, TOLC-I and TOLC-E taken in 2024 and 2025 are valid, provided they have not been used for enrolment in any degree course. If you have taken the test more than once, only the test with the best score will be considered. For complete and detailed information on the TOLC procedures, please visit the CISIA website.

- TOLC@CASA: using your own IT equipment, from home
In both cases, remember to have a valid identity document at hand.

Information for students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders

Language proficiency
Knowledge of English at a minimum B2 level is verified through the possession of specific language certifications or by taking a test administered by the University Language Centre (CLA).
If you do not meet this requirement, you will be assigned an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA), which can be fulfilled by passing an English language proficiency test.

Within deadlines
Access the Online Student Service (Esse3)
- Start the procedure for enrolment applications
Menu > Home > Enrolment
- Complete the required fields and upload the necessary documents:
- Valid identity document in PDF format (front and back)
If you log in using SPID, this will not be required - Supplementary enrolment form (at the bottom of this page)
- Passport-sized photo in JPEG format, NO SELFIES (refer to the requirements)
- Residence permit or proof of application (for non-EU citizens only)
- Valid identity document in PDF format (front and back)
- Pay the first instalment of university fees. This confirms your pre-enrolment.
Within 2 working days of payment, the university's digital services will be activated, limited to Microsoft Teams, to enable access to lectures.
- Wait for the confirmation email
Within a few days, you will receive an email confirming your enrolment. Your student number will then be visible in your Reserved Area on Esse3.
Within two working days of receiving confirmation of your enrolment, you will have full access to the University's digital services (including your institutional email account and the MyUniTS app).
- If you have yet to obtain the required qualification
If you have yet to obtain the required qualification, please start the enrolment procedure regardless, and pay the first instalment of fees. This will allow you to attend classes and give you access to the UniTS e-Learning content.
Within 15 days of receiving your official exam results, you must re-enter the online procedure and enter the missing data.
Enrolment will be finalised, and you will receive your student ID number only after you have graduated and provided the complete documentation.
