Non-competitive admission with initial proficiency assessment (TOLC) 
A test is not required for enrolment, but the course requires an initial proficiency assessment (TOLC)

To enrol in this programme, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Educational qualification: you must hold an upper secondary school diploma or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad
    • If you hold a foreign qualification, consult the information dedicated to International Students to verify the validity of your qualification and specific admission requirements
  • Proficiency in science and mathematics: You must have basic scientific and mathematical knowledge and skills, in particular in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, knowledge of the concept of a mathematical function and its graphical representation.
If you have yet to obtain the required qualification

If you have yet to obtain the required qualification, please start the enrolment procedure regardless, and pay the first instalment of fees.  This will allow you to attend classes and give you access to the UniTS e-Learning content. 

Within 15 days of receiving your official exam results, you must re-enter the online procedure and enter the missing data.

When you have entered the missing details, the enrolment procedure will be completed and you will receive your university matriculation number.

TOLC-S

To enrol in this programme, you are required to take a knowledge assessment test through the TOLC-S, a non-selective test organised by CISIA (Interuniversity Consortium for Integrated Access Systems). This test assesses your aptitude and preparation for mathematics studies and identifies any knowledge gaps. You can take the test at any university, and it will also be valid for this one.

The CISIA tests scheduled by the Department of Mathematics, Informatics and Geosciences are all held in person. The test dates organised by the University of Trieste are usually set at the beginning of September, with an additional resit session in October. The test schedule is published during the summer.

Some universities also offer the possibility of taking the test online (@CASA) using personal equipment. You may take the TOLC-S online at another university and have it recognised at the University of Trieste.
 

Who is required to take the test?

The TOLC-S is not mandatory for enrolment. However, if you do not take it, you will automatically be assigned an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA), which means that you must attend first-year tutoring activities until you make up for the gap by passing the first exam in Mathematical Institutions.

You may be exempt from taking the TOLC if:

  • You have already taken the test at another university and met the minimum score required by the degree course.
  • You already hold a degree.
     

Register to the test

To take the TOLC-S, complete the registration procedure on the official CISIA website and sign up for the test session of your choice.

For academic year 2024/25, TOLC-S tests taken in 2023 and 2024 are valid, provided they have not been used for enrolment in any degree course. If you have taken multiple tests, the first test with a passing score will be considered.
 

Test Structure

The TOLC-S consists of 55 multiple-choice questions divided into six main sections:

  • Mathematics: 20 questions – 50 minutes
  • Logical reasoning, problem-solving, and reading comprehension: 15 questions – 30 minutes
  • Biology: 5 questions – 10 minutes
  • Chemistry: 5 questions – 10 minutes
  • Physics: 5 questions – 10 minutes
  • Earth Sciences: 5 questions – 10 minutes

There is also a final section of the test on English language proficiency, consisting of 30 questions to be answered in 15 minutes. This part of the test does not contribute to the total score.

Scoring system:

  • 1 point for each correct answer
  • -0.25 points for each incorrect answer
  • 0 points for unanswered questions
  • For the English section only: incorrect and unanswered responses receive 0 points
     

Passing the test

The TOLC-S is considered passed if you achieve a total score of at least 18 points. The English language proficiency part of the test does not contribute to the total score. 

f you do not reach this score, you may retake the test in another session offered by any degree course that uses the TOLC-S.

You may enrol even if you fail the test, but you will receive an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA), requiring you to attend first-year tutoring activities until you make up for the gap by passing the first exam in Mathematical Institutions.

Within deadlines

Access the Online Student Service (Esse3)

  1. Start the procedure for enrolment applications
    Menu > Home > Enrolment
     
  2. Complete the required fields and upload the necessary documents:
    • Valid identity document in PDF format (front and back)
      If you log in using SPID, this will not be required
    • Supplementary enrolment form (at the bottom of this page)
    • Passport-sized photo in JPEG format, NO SELFIES (refer to the requirements)
    • Residence permit or proof of application (for non-EU citizens only)
       
  3. Pay the first instalment of university fees. This confirms your pre-enrolment.
    Within 2 working days of payment, the university's digital services will be activated, limited to Microsoft Teams, to enable access to lectures.
     
  4. Wait for the confirmation email
    Within a few days, you will receive an email confirming your enrolment. Your student number will then be visible in your Reserved Area on Esse3.
    Within two working days of receiving confirmation of your enrolment, you will have full access to the University's digital services (including your institutional email account and the MyUniTS app).
