Graduation: specific information

Final examination

The final examination consists in the presentation and discussion of the results of a theoretical-practical study you have conducted and compiled into a written document called Thesis. The thesis is carried out under the supervision of a lecturer from your degree programme, referred to as the supervisor (relatore), on a topic agreed upon together and aligned with your curriculum.

To be admitted to the final examination, you must:

  • Have submitted the online application by the set deadlines
  • Have acquired all the required CFU by the set deadlines
  • Have no borrowed material from the University libraries
  • Have delivered a copy of the thesis to your supervisor

A first draft of the thesis must be submitted to the supervisor at least three weeks before the start of the pre-degree, unless otherwise instructed by the supervisor. If you fail to meet the deadline or make any requested revisions, the supervisor may reject the thesis and not allow you to proceed to the pre-degree discussion. In such cases, they must provide justification and notify the Department Director at least seven days before the start of the preliminary examinations.

The final examination is divided into two phases:

  1. Pre-degree: The discussion takes place before a pre-degree committee, comprising three Department lecturers, including the supervisor. The committee evaluates your final examination and, based on criteria established by the Department, assigns a score to the discussion.
  2. Graduation ceremony: This is when the grade is awarded and the degree is officially conferred. Attendance at the graduation ceremony is mandatory.

For courses taught in English, the entire final examination is conducted in English.

Final examination grade

The final grade takes into account your entire academic career, including acquired credits, assessments from previous educational activities, the final examination and other factors such as internships and international mobility.

The grade is calculated out of 110 and is composed of:

  • Weighted average of exam grades based on acquired credits
  • Up to 5 points awarded by the pre-degree committee
  • 1 point for international mobility (Erasmus+) with at least 12 credits acquired
  • A speed bonus depending on when you complete your degree:
    • 8 points if you graduate in the summer or autumn session of your 3rd year
    • 6 points if you graduate in the extraordinary session of your 3rd year
    • 3 points if you graduate in the summer session of your 1st additional year

To calculate the speed bonus, the academic years are counted from your first year of enrolment, regardless of the institution. If you have transferred from another degree programme or university and have had up to 18 CFU recognised, you can benefit from a one-year reduction in the duration of your academic career. This bonus must be explicitly requested by sending the appropriate form to the Teaching Secretariat (segreteria.didattica@deams.units.it) by the graduation deadline.

Honours

The distinction of honours (lode) is awarded based on different rules depending on the student's year of enrolment in the degree programme. For students enrolled from the academic year 2021/2022 onwards:

  • The initial grade average must be at least 99/110
  • The final exam is awarded 5 points
  • The total score, including any career speed bonus, must reach 110/110
For students enrolled before the academic year 2021/2022
