Internship

Internship description and objectives

The internship is a third-year educational activity aimed at introducing students to the world of research and employment. The Course requires the internship topic to be different from the thesis topic, enabling students to broaden their knowledge in various areas of physics.

The internship is carried out under the supervision of a tutor from the host organisation (company tutor) and a lecturer from the Course (University tutor).

Where to undertake the internship

You can undertake the internship at research institutions, institutes, and public or private companies that have agreements with the University.
To find a host organisation, check the internship proposals on the Department’s website.

What to do BEFORE starting the internship

After identifying the internship tutors, send the following documents to the Teaching Office (didattica.df@units.it):

  • Training Project (Progetto Formativo)
  • Risk assesment form (Scheda rischi)
  • Host organisation form (Scheda dell'ente ospitante)

If required, the host institution can obtain an insurance coverage certificate by contacting the students career Office.

Academic commitment

The curricular internship provides 3 CFU for a total of 75 hours, which can be completed full-time (3 weeks) or part-time (1 month).

Alternatively, you can opt for an extended internship (9 CFU) of 225 hours. In this case, you will be exempt from including the 6 CFU vocational course in your study plan.
This option must be agreed upon in advance with the Academic Board of the degree programme (Commissione Didattica del corso di studi).

Pay attention: First-year students enrolled from the academic year 2024/2025 can only complete 3-CFU internships.

What to do AFTER completing the internship

Send the Attestazione finale signed by both tutors to the Segreteria Didattica (didattica.df@units.it).

To record the 3 CFU internship, email the internship coordinator Prof. Francesco Longo (francesco.longo@ts.infn.it), confirming that you have completed the internship and providing a brief ten-line summary of the activities carried out.

To record the 9 CFU internship, you will need to present the activities carried out and the results achieved in a 20-minute public seminar. Contact Prof. Andrea Bressan (ANDREA.BRESSAN@units.it) to register for the exam session held on the first Monday of each month.

Pay attention: First-year students enrolled from the academic year 2024/2025 can only complete 3-CFU internships.
