At the end of your studies, you will need to complete a final examination which involves the discussion of a technical or scientific paper written in either Italian or English. This paper, developed under the supervision of a course lecturer, allows you to explore a topic covered during your studies or internship period.
The time allocated for writing the final paper should not exceed 2 months to facilitate a quicker transition to a master's degree. However, if you find it beneficial for your personal preparation, you may choose to dedicate more time to the final examination than the number of CFU indicated in the curriculum.
Preparation of the thesis
Contact a professor who will become your supervisor and guide you in drafting the thesis. The supervisor will give you a selected number of articles, book chapters or other resources (preferably in a EU language other than Italian) and help you understand the content.
Your task will involve integrating the initial material with additional articles, software tools, laboratory experiments or other resources and then presenting the final result during the pre-degree.
Pre-degree
The pre-degree envolves the presentation of the final thesis before a pre-degree committee, typically composed of the supervisor and two additional professors from the course.
Prepare a written summary and a presentation of no more than 15 minutes to present to the commission. Both the summary and the presentation can be in another agreed-upon EU language, but an Italian summary is mandatory.
The committee gives a mark out of thirty to the presentation, which is then converted into a score that is added to the final degree mark as indicated below.
Pre-degree sessions are held no later than the Thursday preceding the official graduation date. The exact dates are specified in the calendar at the bottom of the page.
Final degree mark
The final mark is calculated on a 110-point scale as follows:
- Weighted average of exam marks
- Pre-degree mark
- 1 point for marks between 18 and 22
- 2 points for marks between 23 and 25
- 3 points for marks between 26 and 28
- 4 points for marks between 29 and 30
- 1 point for 3 cum laude received during your studies
- Additionally, you may receive:
- 2 points if you graduate by the extraordinary session of the 3rd year
- 1 point if you graduate by the 4th year
The final degree mark is rounded up (i.e., 107.49 becomes 107 while 107.5 becomes 108) and officially assigned during the graduation proclamation ceremony.
