TOLC-I
To enrol in the course, a knowledge assessment is required. The assessment is done through the TOLC-I, a non-selective test organised by CISIA (Interuniversity Consortium for Integrated Access Systems). You can take the test in any university and the result will also be valid for this one.
You can take the test in two formats:
- In presenza (i.e. in person): at the University's IT lab
- @CASA (i.e. at home): using your own IT equipment
In both cases, ensure you have a valid ID document on hand.
The dates for tests organised by the University of Trieste for the A.Y. 2024/2025 are:
- @CASA: 16/04/2024 – session P1
- @CASA: 23/07/2024 – session P1
- In presenza: 03/09/2024 – session M2
- @CASA: 10/09/2024 – session P1
Who needs to take the test?
The TOLC-I is required for enrolment.
You may be exempted from taking the test if:
- You have already passed an Analysis or Geometry exam during a previous University career that was not ended due to withdrawal or lapse.
- You attended a preparatory course on Mathematics during the final year of secondary school and passed the corresponding exam.
To check your exemption status, send an email to areatecnoscientifica.ammissioni@amm.units.it.
Register for the test
To take the TOLC-I, complete the registration process on the official CISIA website and enrol for the desired test.
For enrolment in the academic year 2024/25, TOLC-I tests taken in 2023 and 2024 will be valid, provided they have not been used to enrol in any other course. If you have taken multiple tests, the first one with a positive score will be considered.
Sctructure of the test
The TOLC-I consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and lasts 110 minutes. If you also take the English test, there will be an additional 30 questions to be answered in 15 minutes. The test is divided as follows:
- Mathematics: 20 questions to be answered in 50 minutes
- Science: 10 questions to be answered in 20 minutes
- Logic: 10 questions to be answered in 20 minutes
- Reading comprehension: 10 questions to be answered in 20 minutes
- English (optional for this University): 30 questions to be answered in 15 minutes
The score is as follows:
- 1 point for each correct answer
- -0.25 points for each incorrect answer
- 0 points for unanswered questions
- For the English section only: 0 points for both incorrect and unanswered questions.
Passing the test
You pass the TOLC-I if you achieve a total score of at least 18 points. The English section of the test does not contribute to the total score and does not have a failure threshold but it can be used for self-assessment of your linguistic preparation.
If you do not reach 18 points, you can retake the test in another session offered by any University that adopts the TOLC-I.
You can enrol even if you do not pass the test; however, you will receive an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA), which means that you have to pass Geometry or Calculus I before you can enroll in the 2nd year.
Information for students with disabilities or learning disorders
If you are a student with disability and/or specific learning difficulties, register for the TOLC-I and contact the Service for Students with Disabilities and Specific Learning Difficulties to request specific support at least 10 days before the test. The contacts are:
- Email: disabili.dsa@units.it
- Phone: 040 558 2570; 040 558 7663
To take the TOLC, visit the official CISIA website.
After the test
Preparatory courses in Mathematics for first-year students:
- from 27/08/2024 to 30/08/2024
- from 02/09/2024 to 06/09/2024
Regardless of the test result, if you are a first-year student, we strongly recommend attending the Basic Mathematics preparatory course to help you consolidate fundamental knowledge (logic, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry) and critically review concepts that shoul be already familiar but approached with a broader and more mature perspective. The aim is to facilitate your transition into university studies, making it smoother and free of hurdles.
The detailed schedule and enrolment procedures are published in July.
