Graduation: specific information

The final examination to obtain the Degree requires the writing of a thesis (experimental, theoretical, or computational) on a research topic. The thesis must be completed under the supervision of a supervisor (relatore), i.e., a lecturer from the course.

You must submit the thesis project to the Academic Board with a request for supervisor assignment at least 6 months before the planned thesis discussion.
If you wish to undertake a thesis with an external supervisor, you must first request a meeting with the Board. Once approval is obtained, you must submit a written request to the Board, signed by the proposed supervisor, containing the rationale and project (one to two pages), with a brief description of the objective, techniques to be used, and expected results, at least 8 months before the planned discussion.

You may choose to write the thesis in Italian or English, with the supervisor’s consent. If the thesis is in English, make sure to produce in Italian:

  • The cover page with the title and the name of the supervisor
  • An abstract of the thesis

TAF E and TAF F for a thesis developed abroad

If part or all of the research and writing activities for your thesis are expected to take place at foreign university and/or research institutions, you may request recognition of 6 TAF F credits for the Internship and up to 36 TAF E credits for the final examination as "credits gained abroad". You must submit your request to the Academic Board at the same time as your application for the assignment of a thesis supervisor.

Assessment

The thesis is discussed before a commission of 5 members.

The commission evaluates the final examination on a scale of 110. The final grade is calculated based on:

  • Weighted average of the grades obtained, converted to a scale of 110
  • Up to 7 points for the quality of the thesis and presentation
  • 0.2 points for each exam with honors (maximum of 2 points in total)
  • 2 points if all exams are passed before the extraordinary session of the 2nd year

The highest possible grade is 110/110, and the commission may unanimously decide to award honours (lode).
