KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING At the end of the course the student will demonstrate the basic knowledge and the ability to understand the key concepts and fundamental principles of physics applied to the systemic interation between lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING At the end of the course the student will be able to apply the knowledge acquired for subsequent applications in the broad field of geophysics. AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT At the end of the course, the student will be able to recognize the basic concepts of physics applied to the analysis of cases of geophysical interest. COMMUNICATION SKILLS At the end of the course the student will be able to express themselves with language properties and exposure confidence on the basic themes of geophysics. LEARNING ABILITY At the end of the course the student will be able to apply the knowledge and skills described in this syllabus for subsequent applications in the broad field of geophysics.

Basics of differential equations. Basics of classical physics: mechanics and thermodynamics.

The course, with multidisciplinary contents, will explore the use of physical laws and mathematical models for the study of the dynamics of the Earth system. The following macro-topics will be considered: interactions between lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere; applications and examples of coupled phenomena. Key words: Earth system, physical models.

Introduction to the Earth System. Wave equation in the Earth spheres. Acoustics and Seismology. Fluid dynamics and gravity waves. Transport equations. Convection. Complete Syllabus on http://moodle2.units.it/

Class lectures (complemented by seminars) that consist of the presentation of the theoretical contents and of their possible applications.

Any changes to the methods described here, which become necessary to ensure the application of the security protocols related to the COVID19 emergency, will be communicated on the Department and Study Course website.

The detailed information (e.g. the Syllabus) will be available on Moodle platform, and it will be discussed during the first lesson Keywords: Earth system, physical models, geophysics.

Periodic questions, and development of exercises, to the students in order to verify the learning status. Individual oral exam consisting in a discussion about the topics treated during the course, with a duration of about one half hour

This course explores topics closely related to one or more goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs)
