- Advanced concepts and skills
The course aims for students to acquire:
1) Knowledge and understanding skills: a thorough knowledge of the main pathologies of the oral cavity both malformative and acquired that are relevant to the profession of speech therapy.
2) Applied knowledge and understanding skills: acquiring the theoretical basis to know how to use and read data from the main diagnostic, instrumental and laboratory examinations, and intra- and extra-oral objective examination.
3) Autonomy of judgment, acquiring one's own integrated vision of pathologies of the oral cavity which, starting from the assumption that many of them may represent the localization of systemic or genetic pathologies, leads to a unified, albeit articulated, conception of the state of health, with the ability to foresee the realistic consequences of the simplest pathological situations and to know how to manage them from a diagnostic and therapeutic point of view.
4) Communication skills, getting used to exposition, in the classroom, of the concepts required by the lecturer, in a stimulating and interactive teaching environment. Students will always be urged to keep in mind the need for scientifically rigorous exposition and communication with colleagues and simple, yet comprehensive, with patients and their families. They will be stimulated to express themselves in correct and essential language.
5) Ability to learn: during the lectures, reference will mainly be made to the notes that the lecturer will make available to the students, but students will be urged to consult the literature that will be cited in the course of the lecture. The topics covered will always be approached from different points of view so that the student can form a clear and complete opinion.
Human anatomy
The course will cover in-depth study of the anatomy of the oral cavity, abnormalities of shape and development both congenital and acquired, malocclusions, and incorrect habits that can affect the proper development of the jaws. The diagnostic and therapeutic part related to oral cavity neoplasms and prosthetic rehabilitations will also be explained.
Slides pertaining to the topics covered will be projected, and the lecturer will provide a text containing related notes.
- Macroscopic and Microscopic Anatomy of the Oral Cavity
- Malformations of the orofacial area
- Congenital Alterations and Tongue Growth Disorders
- Malocclusions
- Oral breathing and bad habits
- Correlation between malocclusions and pediatric diseases
- THE SQUAMOUS CARCINOMA OF THE ORAL CAVITY
- Aesthetic-functional rehabilitation of the oral cavity after demolition interventions
Frontal lessons.
Any changes to the methods described here, which may be necessary to ensure the application of the security protocols related to the COVID19 emergency, will be communicated on the website of the Department, the Degree Program and the teaching.
Lessons will be recorded and stored on Teams platform.
The verification of the knowledge learned will be performed through an oral exam.
The grading system applied is:
(18-24): sufficient or fair knowledge of the subject, adequate mastery of the technical language
(25-27): good or very good knowledge of the subject, technical language proficiency, essential ability to connect the themes addressed during the course
(28-30 with honours): excellent knowledge of the subject and technical language proficiency, autonomous critical and analytical skills, and ability to apply acquired knowledge to concrete scenarios.
During the course some of the main issues indicated in the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development will be addressed, i.e. spreading the importance of primary and secondary prevention through the reduction of the exposure of the population to environmental and anthropogenic risk factors, and the spread of healthy lifestyles by strengthening prevention systems.
