During the course, the role of the nurse and healthcare personnel in the management of Clinical Risk, Service Quality and Patient Safety will be explored.
At the end of the course, in accordance with the Dublin Descriptors, in order to pass the proficiency exam the student must demonstrate:
Knowledge and comprehension skills – know how to recognise events, near misses and sentinel episodes and know the basics of infectious risk management.
Applied knowledge and comprehension skills – know how to report events, near misses and sentinel episodes with the correct tools and apply the main error analysis methods.
Autonomy of judgment – having developed the ability to identify the correct approach to error and recognizing the main risks to the patient in health care settings.
Communication skills – Been able to use technical-professional language correctly and appropriately to expound clearly and unambiguously the knowledge acquired and reasoning developed.
Ability to Learn – Been able to integrate the information provided in class by drawing independently on authoritative information sources, as well as to be able to self-assess one's own level of preparation and ability to express organized thought before taking the proficiency exam.

Systemic and organizational approach to clinical risk
Errors, adverse events, sentinel events, near misses
Grading and classification of error
Proactive and reactive methods for risk assessment
Legal principles: responsibilities and safeguards for health care providers
Quality systems in health care and institutional accreditation models
A focus on Infectious Risk and the basics of Infection Control
Presentation and discussion of relevant cases

FIRST PART – CLINICAL RISK
The definition of error;
Grading and classification of error;
The definition of Clinical Risk;
The legislative principles underlying Clinical Risk;
Error prevention;
Reporting protocols for negative events and near miss;
Proactive and reactive methods for risk assessment;
Corrective protocols of system errors;
Definition of sentinel event and how it is different from other events;
The dimension of this problem;
Types of sentinel events;
Monitoring of sentinel events;
Legal principles: responsibilities and safeguards for health care providers;
Quality systems in health care and institutional accreditation models.
SECOND PART – INFECTIOUS RISK
Pathway of Transmission of Infectious Diseases and Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI);
Definition of Outbreak;
Standard precautions, based on the pathway of transmission and Patient isolation;
Hand hygiene;
Bundles for the prevention of Healthcare-Related Infections related to care practices;
Surveillance Systems (hand hygiene, HAI, antibiotics, AMR);
Dirt-cleaning pathways;
Waste management;
Vaccination of health care workers.
Interactive face-to-face lectures with the aid of projections of Power Point or compatible files prepared by the teacher.

Written test consisting of 31 multiple choice questions. Duration of the test 1 hour. The final grade is expressed in thirtieths according to the following criteria: 1 point for each correct multiple answer and 0 points if wrong or missing answer.
