Syllabus

D1. Knowledge and understanding. Learning about the main tenets of Stylistcs through lectures and the close reading of fictional texts or some short videos from TV shows. D2. Applying knowledge and understanding. Analysing different texts types by means of various critical tools discussed during the course. D3. Making judgments. Acquiring knowledge for critically understanding, analysing and writing texts addressing fictional and non-fictional aspects of texts. D4. Communication skills. Articulating analyses both in in written and in oral form at the ‘C1-’ Level of English. Students will be guided to the composition of written analyses during the course. D5. learning skills. Developing general critical abilities regarding various genres.

English language II and English literature II/Anglo-American Literature II

LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE: STYLISTIC APPROACHES TO NARRATIVE TEXTS The main goal of the course is to enable students to gain a general knowledge of the primary analytical features of narrative texts. Specifically, the course will begin with an introduction to the main tenets of literary stylistics. Extracts from novels and poetry will be presented and discussed with the students to assemble a toolkit for stylistic analysis. Specific attention will be paid to pragmatic and cognitive approaches.

Selected chapters from: Jeffries, Lesley, and Daniel McIntyre. Stylistics. Cambridge University Press, 2010. For the LETTORATO part: - Tom Bradbury & Eunice Yeates, Exam Essential Practice Tests, Cambridge English Advanced 1(without key), 2014. - Jan Bell & Roger Gower, Advanced Expert Coursebook, Pearson, 2015 (3rd edition with exam specification). - Materials provided by the teacher



Traditional lectures and guided activities in class. Students' presentations will also be encouraged. Questions, comments, discussions about the contents of the course are very welcome. Specific writing activities addressing the different course topics will be held to train students for the final exam. The LETTORATO lessons are essential for this course, therefore students are highly recommended to attend their classes.

Classes are held in person. Students with special needs (including those with disabilities, workers, athletes, adults, parents, and detainees) who are permanently or temporarily unable to attend classes in person due to particular circumstances, will be allowed to participate remotely upon request to the teacher. The request, for which the student takes full responsibility, should be sent via email to the teacher before the beginning of the course. For information about digital teaching at the university, please visit the following link: [https://www.units.it/studenti/didattica-digitale] Students who have actively attended the Lettorato lessons for at least 75% of the overall amount of hours throughout the year can obtain a bonus of 1 point, only provided they have reached a sufficient level.

IMP: In order to sit Lingua Inglese 3, students need to have passed Lingua Inglese 1, Lingua Inglese 2, Letteratura Inglese/Angloamericana 1 and Letteratura Inglese/Angloamericana 2 Student learning will be assessed through a written and an oral exam. The written exam consists of 4 parts: 1. Reading and Use of English; 2 Listening; 3. Writing (general essay or open questions covering the topics discussed in class – essay marked out of 30) 4. Oral (CEL content) IMPORTANT: First of all students will take 1). Once 1) is passed, they can move to 2). Students can only take 3) once 2) is also passed. Only students who have also passed 3) can move on to the oral. The results of 1) and 2) are summed up and converted into a mark of 30. 3) and 4) are also a mark out of 30. The weight given to each part is: 35% Reading and Use of English+listening, 50% Writing, 15% Oral. NB: Students who wish to enroll for the exam can do so from three weeks to one week before the exam. Those who do not sign up in those dates will not be allowed to sit the exam. No exception will be made to this rule.
