Is part of:
D1. Knowledge and understanding: At the end of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of occupational medicine, with particular reference to occupational risks in the dental sector, the primary and secondary prevention measures to be implemented, the obligations established by the TU in the field of health and safety at work, especially at the expense of the employer. They must also know how to develop this knowledge in their own working context.
D2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: At the end of the course, the learner must be able to apply the knowledge acquired in D1 to solve possible work problems relating to health and safety. They must know how to use the tools to correctly carry out the basic assessment of the occupational risks present in the company. Be able to read and interpret the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Be able to implement all technical, organisational and procedural measures to reduce biological, ergonomic and physical risks (hand-arm vibration, ROA and RI) in the workplace.
D3. Make judgements: At the end of the course the student will be able to choose the best solutions to eliminate/reduce occupational risks in their own workplace. They will be able to choose the PPE with the least allergenic/irritant potential, the chemical products with the least impact on the health and safety of workers, the vibrating tools with the least impact on the vascular-neuro-tendon tissues of the upper limbs and with a more ergonomic grip. You will also know which whole body, neck and upper limb postures are good and which are not. You will be able to formulate solutions even in complex scenarios.
D4. Communication skills: At the end of the course, the student shall be able to clearly communicate the conclusions of the decision making process referred to in point D3 to his/her peers and to any inspection services of the regulatory authorities.
D5. Learning skills: At the end of the course, the student shall be able to independently investigate and solve any occupational health and safety problem from the employer's point of view.
Attend and pass Health and Safety in the Workplace course (first year)

Alessio Lorenzo, Franco Giuliano, Apostoli Pietro. Trattato di Medicina del Lavoro. Piccin, 2015
- Regulatory framework and Legislative Decree 81/2008, - Health surveillance, -injuries and occupational diseases with a focus on the dental sector, - Risk of allergies and dermatitis, with a focus on the specific sector. - Biological risks in healthcare settings, with a focus on the dental field. - The risk of chemical agents: MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), CLP legislation for labelling and marketing of substances and preparations in the EU. Focus on substances used in dentistry. Selection of the necessary PPE. - Ergonomic risks and repetitive strain disorders in dentistry, their effective prevention. - Risks of artificial optical radiation (AOR) and lasers in dentistry. - Ionising radiation.
Lectures and group work on specific topics, which students will present to the class from mid-course onwards.
The assessment of the student consists of a written test and a group work with the presentation of a final paper. The written test consists of 26 multiple-choice questions and one open question. Each correct multiple-choice answer will be marked out of 1, each blank or incorrect answer will be marked out of 0. Each open-ended question may be marked out of 0 to 2 depending on the appropriateness and completeness of the answer and the clarity of presentation. Each student will have approximately 10 minutes for the oral presentation of their part of the group work. This test will be marked out of 3 on the basis of the relevance of the content to the assigned topic and the ability to present it to the class and the teacher. The final score of the examination is given by a mark out of thirty, calculated on the basis of the sum of the results obtained in the multiple choice questions, the open questions and the oral presentation. In order to pass the examination (18/30), the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired sufficient knowledge of the occupational medicine topics applied to the dental sector to obtain the maximum mark (30/30 with distinction); instead, the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, answering all the questions correctly and giving a more than satisfactory oral presentation.
During the course, some of the main issues indicated in the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development will be addressed, i.e. spreading the importance of primary and secondary prevention through reducing the exposure of the working population to occupational and environmental risk factors, and the diffusion of healthy lifestyles by strengthening prevention systems
