The aim of the teaching is to offer useful parameters for developing the ability to develop diagnostic criteria for pathologies pertaining to the oral cavity. Knowledge of the diagnostic tools available to effectively address the nature and differential diagnosis of lesions of the oral cavity and salivary glands. Acquire useful information for cytological and molecular diagnostics of HPV-related lesions with particular reference to the oral Pap test and HPV tests.
At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student should be able to identify the main pathologies of the oral cavity.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- use evaluation techniques for differential diagnostics;
- acquire useful information for cytological and molecular diagnostics;
AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
critically evaluate the outcomes of decisions on the classification of lesions of the oral cavity and salivary glands.
LEARNING SKILLS
Develop independent study skills, demonstrate the ability to continuously seek out opportunities for self-study and self-assessment of one's own skills and outline one's own development and learning needs. Seek out information needed to resolve problems or uncertainties, critically selecting secondary and primary sources of research evidence.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The student should demonstrate correct use of terminology and the ability to justify decision-making choices.
Having attended pathological anatomy courses
Normal and pathological features of the lesions of interest of the cervical district and in particular of the oral cavity. Methods of cytological diagnostic approach of leukoplasic lesions (oral pap test): limits and potential. Agospirative cytology of salivary nodular lesions and lymph nodes of the neck. HPV research methods in liquid base materials and in cell block. Discussion of clinical cases

Frontal teaching and small-group exercise with participation in needle aspiration cytology sessions and visit to a cytology laboratory and the regional single HPV laboratory at Cattinara Hospital with participation in a testing session
A number of emblematic clinical cases drawn from the routine will be presented so as to consolidate what was expounded during the lectures.
Oral interview consisting of a question on a topic of the instructor's choice pertaining to oral pathology lasting about 10 minutes if the student answers smoothly. The evaluation will be given the grade of Passed or Failed.
This course explores topics closely related to one or more goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs)
