The final examination consists of the writing and discussion of a thesis in either Italian or English on a topic agreed upon with a lecturer who will guide you in the role of supervisor. You will have to present the thesis in a technical presentation (Pre-graduation) and a public seminar (Graduation session), demonstrating organisational, written, and oral communication skills.
If your supervisor is not a lecturer or researcher at the University of Trieste or SISSA (MAT or INF sectors), the Board of Studies must approve their appointment.
Final examination
To be admitted, you must:
- Have completed all the required exams and credits (except those related to the final examination) at least 15 days before the final examination.
- Upload the dissertation on Esse3 and submit a hard copy to the Chair of the Graduation Committee at least 8 days before the final examination.
- Depending on whether you wrote your dissertation in Italian or English, attach an extended abstract in the other language.
Discussion Phases
The final examination consists of two phases:
- Pre-graduation: A technical presentation (40-45 minutes, supported by slides) before a Committee of three members. A brief report will be drawn up and sent to the Coordinator of the Course of Study or the Chair of the Graduation Committee.
- Graduation: The final presentation (10-12 minutes with slides) before a Committee of 7 members, appointed by the Head of Department. Following the discussion, the committee will determine the final grade.
Calculation of the final grade
The final grade is determined based on:
- The weighted average of exam grades.
- The content and quality of the dissertation.
- The discussion and completed learning activities.
The final mark is based on 110, with a maximum of 10 additional points awarded for the dissertation, in addition to the weighted average of the exams. Honours may be granted based on the quality of the work and academic performance.
