Final exam
At the end of your studies, you will face a final exam consisting of the discussion of a technical or scientific thesis The thesis allows you to explore a topic related to your degree programme or can be undertaken as part of an internship.
Thesis
The final exam involves a significant design/methodological activity, culminating in a master’s thesis. Through the thesis, you must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the topics studied, the ability to work independently and a good level of communication skills.
The thesis topic must relate either to the internship undertaken or to subjects connected to the course.
The thesis is completed under the guidance of a lecturer acting as an internal supervisor, with the possibility of additional co-supervisors, including those external to the University.
You may choose to write the thesis in either Italian or English.
Pre-degree
The pre-degree phase involves presenting the thesis before a pre-degree committee, typically composed of the supervisor and two additional course lecturers.
Prepare a written summary and a 30-40 minute presentation of the thesis for the committee. Both the summary and the presentation can be in any EU language other than Italian; however, in this case, it is mandatory to include a summary in Italian.
The committee gives a mark out of thirty to the presentation, which is then converted into a score that will be added to the final degree mark.
Proclamation
During the graduation proclamation session, you will present the thesis results to a graduation committee. This time, the presentation should be shorter, lasting approximately 15 minutes and delivered to a wider audience.
Final grade
The final grade is calculated on a scale of 110, using the formula L=110/30 * (Ncr*E + n*P)/(Ncr+n) + Δ, with Δ = t + d + l + c, where:
- Ncr is the sum of credits from graded exams
- n is the number of credits assigned to the thesis
- E is the weighted average of exam grades
- P is the score awarded for the pre-degree
- Δ are additional points (from 0 to 6), calculated as follows
- t is the type of thesis
- 0 points for a descriptive thesis
- 1 point for a project-based thesis
- 2points for a research thesis
- d is the duration of studies
- 1 point if you graduate by the April session of the second year
- l is the number of cum laude obtained
- 1 point for 4-7 cum laude
- 2 points for 8 or more cum laude
- c is the assessment by the graduation committee
- 0-1 point
- t is the type of thesis
The final grade is rounded (e.g., 107.49 becomes 107, while 107.50 becomes 108) and is awarded during the graduation proclamation ceremony.
