Is part of:
Knowledge and understanding: to know the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere and the hydrosphere; to know their main pollutants and tier sources. To know how they are measured in ambient air and water. To know how public management of pollution takes place.
Applying knowledge and understanding: To be able to consult the current legislation.
Making judgements: to be able to evaluate the extent of the pollution phenomena, possible solutions and methods of action to solve them.
Communication skills: to be able to interact, also with a critical approach, with the technical professionals and with stakeholders.
Learning skills: to develop a critical and creative thinking on the subject. To be able to deepen the knowledge in the environmental subjects by reading the scientific literature in the field.
Basics of general chemistry
• An introduction to the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere and the hydrosphere.
• Air pollution. Definitions, origin, influence of meteorological parameters.
• Water pollution. Definitions, origin; pollutants vs nutrients. Environmental fate of the pollutants.
• An introduction to the legislation for the protection of air and water quality. Monitored pollutants.
• Ambient air quality monitoring. The regional network of air quality monitoring; the results of the monitoring referred in particularly to the cities of Udine and Trieste.
• An introduction to the most significative air and water pollution source (with example from FVG region).
• Air emissions: regulatory framework. Monitoring of industrial emissions; conveyed and fugitive emissions; "chimney" monitoring. Monitoring of fallouts from diffuse sources and from industrial activities.
• Water discharges: regulatory framework. Wastewaters (urban and industrial) and their treatment. Monitoring of wastewater diffusion in ambient water.

Class (and remote) lectures, also with presentation and discussion of case-studies.
Final test + oral discussion of its results.
The final score is attributed by means of a mark expressed out of thirty, that will take into account the results of the final test and the critical evaluation (during a short oral discussion) of the eventual mistakes occurred in the final test.
