Syllabus

Knowledge and understanding: - to know what microeconomics is and why is important; - to know how microeconomic models are used to explain consumers’ and producers’ behavior. Applying knowledge and understanding: -to know how to use graphs and simple mathematics to analyze simple economic problems; -to analyze the effects of change of exogenous variables and describe the adjustment process. Making judgements: -To be able to analyze and critically discuss the topics studied during the course. Communication skills -to present and discuss the main topics studied during the course using the appropriate terminology. Learning skill: -to possess the basic tools to go further in the study of economics.

No formal prerequisites; basics of general mathematics strongly recommended

Introduction: markets and prices -The basics of supply and demand -Producers, consumers, competitive markets - Price elasticity and surplus - Price control, taxes, subsidies, etc. Demand - Consumer behavior - Individual and market demand - Intertemporal choices, labour supply - Uncertainty and Consumer Behavior Supply - Production function - Production costs - Profit maximization - The analysis of competitive markets - Market structure and competitive strategy - Monopoly and monopsony - Price discrimination - Monopolistic competition and oligopoly - Market failure and the role of government General equilibrium and economic efficiency. Asymmetric information. Externalities and public goods.

Written test will be composed by - open questions and/or multiple choices to test the understanding of the basic concepts and tools of microeconomics; - exercises to test the ability to solve simple problems/exercises.
